The monthly nominations for the club person, male and female athletes are collated at the end of the financial year. The members of the committee condense those that have been nominated during the year down to a top 8 in each category. From the committee's votes the top 8 most popular nominees are made into an overall Trotter of the Year category. The members of Terrigal Trotters vote for their top club person, male athlete, female athlete, masters athlete (for runners 50 years of age and older) and Trotter of the Year.

The junior athlete is voted by the committee members only and considers both athletic ability and contribution to club activities.

The period for consideration for all the following awards is the aggregation of the 12 monthly awards periods for the year. The monthly awards periods always run from the beginning of the last Saturday of the month until the end of the Friday before the last Saturday of the subsequent month. This usually should align with the time trial.

The winners of these awards are announced at a presentation which usually takes place in August.
